That's not a sentence that existed two years ago. Today it does and the 25-minute video that Jack Scarlett and the Top Gear Tech team dropped on September 18th, is the most mainstream, most watchable factory tour the Tesla Semi has ever received. Six days out from the September 24th factory rollout event in Sparks the official inauguration we've been counting down to on our homepage -Top Gear Tech just handed the Semi its biggest mainstream media moment yet.
The Factory — What Jack Scarlett Actually Walked Through

1.7 million square feet. $3.6 billion. Built for 50,000 trucks a year.
Located on Electric Avenue in Sparks, Nevada yes, that's the actual street name the factory sits directly adjacent to Giga factory Nevada and was designed from the ground up with one purpose: build the Semi at scale, fast, and without the compromises that come from retrofitting an existing plant.
The number that puts the scale in perspective: one new Semi every 8 minutes at full production rate. That's 1,000 trucks per week. The factory was designed around that cadence, not the other way around.
The overhead carrier system is the detail that kept coming up in the tour and deserves more attention than it's getting. Tesla built some of the largest overhead carriers in the world specifically for this facility — massive systems that move sub-assemblies through the air, keeping the floor clear and allowing the build sequence to flow without the spatial bottlenecks that cripple traditional truck manufacturing lines. Dan Priestley, Semi Program Director, has described it as building the truck in "minimum viable space" — the factory is large but the manufacturing flow is engineered to eliminate waste at every step.

The truck and the factory were designed together. That's not marketing language — it's the detail that separates the Semi's production approach from every diesel Class 8 built before it. A Peterbilt or Kenworth starts with a chassis architecture that's decades old and builds a factory around it. Tesla started with a blank sheet and built both simultaneously. The result is a factory that builds a truck that couldn't have come from any other factory.
The Production Truck - New Details From the Tour

The production Tesla Semi truck is not the same truck that showed up in the 2017 reveal or the 2022 PepsiCo deliveries. The Top Gear Tech tour confirmed specific production changes that represent meaningful engineering refinements:
Powder-coated, not painted. Like the Megapack energy storage units, the production Semi gets a powder coat finish instead of traditional automotive paint. More durable, more consistent at scale, and better suited to a commercial truck that's going to spend its life in freight yards and dock approaches. Less susceptible to chipping, easier to touch up, and cheaper to apply at volume.
New Model Y-style face with a light bar. The front end has been updated a more refined aesthetic that brings the Semi's look in line with Tesla's current design language while also improving the aerodynamic profile.
Three-piece front end. The bumper/fascia assembly is now three separate sections rather than one unit. If a driver catches a dock corner or a low-speed obstacle — which happens constantly in freight operations — they can replace one section rather than the entire front. That's a maintenance and cost consideration that Tesla baked directly into the production design.
~3% efficiency improvement over prototypes. The production truck is measurably more efficient than the prototype units that PepsiCo, DHL, and ArcBest have been running. That already-strong pilot data — ArcBest at 1.55 kWh/mile over Donner Pass, Mone Transport at 1.64 kWh/mile across Texas came from pre-production trucks. The production unit beats them.
Cold-weather optimizations confirmed. The production truck includes specific hardware and software improvements for cold-climate operations — relevant for operators in the upper Midwest, Canada (Bison Transport is currently evaluating in Chicago), and Europe (2027 deliveries).

The Performance Numbers - Confirmed in the Tour

Top Gear Tech is a performance media outlet. They asked the performance questions and got real numbers:
0-60 mph empty: ~12.5 seconds. For a 19,000+ lb vehicle with no load. That's sedan territory in a truck body.
0-60 mph loaded (40,000 lb payload): ~24 seconds. Still faster than most diesel Class 8s pulling the same weight, and the pull is linear — no gear changes, no power band hunting, no transmission shock. The torque is there from zero rpm.
On a 3% grade: holds ~65 mph where a diesel often falls to about 50 mph. That's the number that matters for linehaul operators on routes like I-80 through the Sierra or I-70 through the Rockies. Grade holding speed directly affects delivery schedules and HOS planning.
Three motors, ~1,076 horsepower total. The tri-motor setup two on the rear drive axle uses a high-torque motor that decouples at cruise speed so the efficiency-tuned motor carries the load on flat highway. You get the launch and climb performance without paying the efficiency penalty at cruise. It's the same philosophy Tesla applied to the Performance variants of their passenger cars, scaled to Class 8.
Regenerative braking on grades. Going down the mountain recovers energy instead of burning brakes. On a loaded downhill run, the Semi actively charges the battery reducing brake wear to near zero on descents and recovering usable range. For mountain routes, regen braking is a meaningful operational advantage that diesel trucks simply don't have.

The Cab - What Jack Found Inside

The center-seat driving position is the detail that lands differently when you actually sit in it versus seeing a render.
Jack Scarlett noted consistent with every other driver who's spent time in the production cab that the center seat with the panoramic wraparound windshield changes your spatial awareness of the truck in a way that takes about one shift to get used to and then feels obviously correct. The visual field is simply bigger. Blind spots that exist in every conventional cab are dramatically reduced.
Camera arms instead of traditional mirrors the system that Dan Priestley said at IAA Hannover he wishes he could sell in the US the same way Europe already permits it. The camera feeds give you better situational awareness at docks and in tight yards than any mirror ever has. The US regulatory approval for the camera-mirror system is still pending European customers in 2027 get it standard.
NVH: nearly nothing. Noise, vibration, harshness at highway speeds is a fraction of what a diesel cab produces. The combination of electric motors with no combustion, no transmission, and no diesel drone means the driver is arriving at the end of a shift meaningfully less physically depleted than their diesel counterpart. Every pilot program has reported this. Top Gear Tech confirmed it firsthand.
No gear shifts. No clutch. For experienced drivers retraining on the Semi, these are the two changes that take the least time to adjust to because they're subtractions, not additions. You stop doing something, and that something was physically demanding.
September 24th" ROLL OUT " Is Six Days Away

TOP GEAR TECH dropped their factory tour on September 18th. Tesla's official Semi Rollout Event is September 24th factory tours, ride-alongs, and the formal inauguration of the building that just got 25 minutes of the most watchable EV coverage of 2026.
The sequencing could not be better timed. IAA Hannover closed September 20th with European specs confirmed. Now the factory that will build those European trucks gets its official opening ceremony.
