Just the actual numbers on what the Tesla Semi costs, what incentives are available right now, what it costs to operate versus a diesel Class 8, and what the real payback timeline looks like for a working fleet. Tesla hasn't published an official retail price sheet the way traditional OEMs do, but public quotes and fleet contracts have established market pricing clearly:
For context, a comparably specced diesel Class 8 Freightliner Cascadia, Kenworth T680, Peterbilt 579 runs $170,000 to $200,000 new. The Semi premium is real: roughly $90,000 to $120,000 over diesel on acquisition cost alone.
That's the number everyone leads with. The incentive stack is why it's not the number that matters.

The Incentive Stack How California Gets to $50K
Stack HVIP + CCFR + federal 45W and a Long Range Semi drops from $290K to somewhere near $50K for qualifying California fleets.This is where the conversation changes completely. California has built an incentive architecture around zero-emission Class 8 trucks that, when stacked correctly, is genuinely transformative for small and mid-size fleet operators.
HVIP — Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project
California's HVIP program provides vouchers for zero-emission commercial vehicles at the point of sale. For a Class 8 Tesla Semi, HVIP vouchers can reach $150,000 per truck for qualifying small fleet operators. The voucher is applied directly against the purchase price no waiting for a rebate check.
CCFR — California Clean Fuel Reward
The CCFR adds another layer on top of HVIP, specifically for vehicles transitioning from diesel. Combined with HVIP, the two California programs alone can cover $200,000+ of the purchase price for eligible operators.
IRA Section 45W — Federal Commercial Clean Vehicle Tax Credit
At the federal level, the Inflation Reduction Act's Section 45W provides a tax credit of up to $40,000 per vehicle for Class 8 zero-emission trucks. This stacks on top of both California programs for qualifying buyers.
The stacked result: A Long Range Semi at $290,000 minus HVIP ($150K) minus CCFR and related programs (~$90K combined) minus 45W ($40K) gets you to an effective acquisition cost in the $50,000-$60,000 range for qualifying California small fleet operators.
That math has been detailed thoroughly by EVwire and it's accurate for operators who qualify. The Port of LA has its own layer on top of this up to $300,000 per truck through its Zero-Emission Truck Purchasing Incentive Program for drayage operators at the port complex.
Important caveats: HVIP voucher windows open and close on a schedule and funds are limited — when the money's gone, it's gone until the next allocation. Eligibility requirements vary by fleet size, operation type, and whether you're in a disadvantaged community air basin. Consult directly with HVIP and your accountant before building purchase math around the full stack.

The purchase price story matters less than the operating cost story for a working fleet. Here's where the Semi makes its real argument.

A diesel Class 8 at 6.5 MPG at current national diesel prices around $3.80/gallon burns through roughly $0.585 per mile in fuel alone. On a 100,000-mile annual run that's $58,500 per truck per year in diesel.
The Tesla Semi at 1.7 kWh/mile charging at commercial Megacharger rates around $0.15-0.20/kWh runs approximately $0.26-0.34 per mile in energy. On 100,000 miles that's $26,000-$34,000 per truck per year.
Annual energy savings vs diesel: roughly $24,000 to $32,000 per truck.
Every real-world pilot has confirmed the 1.7 kWh/mile target or beaten it. ArcBest hit 1.55 kWh/mile over Donner Pass at 7,200 feet. Mone Transport logged 1.64 kWh/mile across Texas border routes. Maintenance Cost
This is where the Semi's advantage compounds over time and where diesel TCO gets genuinely ugly.
A diesel Class 8 averages $0.18-0.22 per mile in maintenance costs oil changes every 25,000 miles, DEF fluid, coolant, belt and hose replacements, DPF cleaning, turbocharger service, and the inevitable powertrain rebuild somewhere around 600,000-800,000 miles. For a 100,000-mile annual operation that's $18,000-$22,000 per truck per year in maintenance.
The Tesla Semi's drivetrain has dramatically fewer moving parts no pistons, no crankshaft, no transmission, no exhaust system, no DEF tank. Tesla has not published an official maintenance cost figure, but EV drivetrains in commercial applications have consistently run 40-60% lower than diesel equivalents. Conservative estimate for the Semi: $8,000-$12,000 per year in maintenance.
Annual maintenance savings vs diesel: roughly $8,000 to $12,000 per truck.
Combined annual operating savings: $32,000 to $44,000 per truck.
The TCO Breakdown 5-Year and 10-Year Ownership Math

Depot Charging The Infrastructure Cost Fleet Operators Miss

The purchase price and fuel savings math only works if you solve the charging question. For most fleets, that means depot charging — and that has its own cost structure.
Option 1: Build Your Own Depot
A dedicated MCS (Megawatt Charging System) installation for a small fleet of 5-10 Semis typically runs $500,000 to $1.5 million depending on electrical infrastructure, number of stalls, and site conditions. Spread across 10 trucks over 10 years that's $50,000-$150,000 per truck meaningful but absorbable in the TCO model above.
Option 2: Forum Mobility / Third-Party Depot
Companies like Forum Mobility are building shared charging depots specifically for Tesla Semi fleets and offering lease-plus-charging packages. Their Rancho Dominguez depot already committed to by QX Logistix (20 trucks), NICA (20 trucks), and Big F (40 trucks) — removes the infrastructure capital cost entirely. The fleet pays a per-mile or per-kWh rate and has no upfront depot spend. This is the model that makes the Semi accessible to small and mid-size carriers who can't write a $1M check for an electrical installation.
Option 3: Tesla Public Megacharger Network
For fleets that can't depot charge, the public Megacharger network is expanding. The first public Semi Megacharger opened in Ontario, California in March 2026. The Autonomous Semi And Why It Changes the Long-Term Math
Musk attached a soft timeline to autonomous Semi on the Q2 2026 earnings call — "around the end of this year or early next year" for generalized unsupervised FSD on the volume fleet first.On the Q2 2026 earnings call, Elon Musk gave the clearest timeline yet for autonomous Semi capability. Asked about the long-running self-driving question, Musk said Tesla would turn its FSD effort toward the Semi "around the end of this year or early next year" once generalized unsupervised FSD is solid on Model 3 and Model Y.
His framing was direct:
"There is a really serious shortage of truckers. So there just aren't enough people who want to drive trucks, which are crucial for transport throughout America. So an autonomous Semi is actually very important to address the shortage of truck drivers."
The priority sequencing makes sense Tesla's volume fleet is passenger cars, so that's where the "March of Nines" (Musk's term for the grind from 99.9% reliable to fully unsupervised) gets the engineering focus first. The Semi gets it once the core system is proven.
What this means for fleet buyers making purchase decisions right now: the Semi you buy in 2026 is the truck that gets autonomous capability when the software is ready. Unlike diesel trucks, which are hardware-fixed at purchase, the Semi's FSD capability is a software update. Fleets that lock in orders now are buying into the autonomy roadmap at today's prices and today's incentive levels both of which will change as production scales.

The Semi makes the clearest financial case for:
California port drayage operators — short, predictable routes, access to the full incentive stack, Forum Mobility depot infrastructure already being built. The economics are the best available anywhere in North America.
Dedicated contract carriers on fixed corridors — operators like Paper Transport (Chicago evaluation), Covenant, and King Fio running predictable daily mileage where depot charging works perfectly and the 500-mile LR range covers nearly any dedicated lane.
Fleet operators near Megacharger corridors — the I-5 California corridor (Ontario + Stockton), the Nevada-California run, and the I-35 Texas corridor (Laredo + Irving + Dallas permitted) all have charging infrastructure either live or coming within 12 months.

The sticker price is the wrong number to start with.
The right numbers are: net acquisition cost after your incentive stack, annual energy savings versus the diesel you're replacing, maintenance delta over a 5-10 year horizon, and what autonomous capability adds to the residual value of a truck you buy today.
Run those four numbers for your operation and the Tesla Semi looks very different than the $290,000 headline.
